Hawthorn University is a student supported university where life-long learning inspires our mission. The Continuing Education Program was inaugurated at Hawthorn in January 2010 inspired by life-long learners; teachers, students, administrators, applicants, and patrons of Hawthorn University. We are impassioned because the field is exploding with information, maturing, and developing breadth. There is much to learn!

This new program, put together by health and nutrition professionals and the directors of Hawthorn University includes provocative and insightful, educational, professional development, and webinar certificate courses with topics selected by Hawthorn faculty, students, professionals in the field and Hawthorn elders. These courses are tightly focused and designed and many can be completed in as little as three (3) weeks. Courses in this area that carry college credits are taught by instructors. Those with the prefix CE are independent study courses. The CE courses include a selection of readings from excellent textbooks, web links to relevant online information, lectures or webinars, community-based and written activities, and online exams. Continuing Education Courses

How do you feel about our food supply being altered by biotechnology? Learn how genetic engineering works, understand the health risk associated with genetically modified foods, and recognize how you and your children are at risk. In addition to being introduced to revealing studies, students will learn what they can do to reduce the risk of disease resulting from GM foods and how to alter the continuation of the fraud and deception within the food industry. This course is worth 3 CE credits.

This course educates students about the specifics of how genetic engineering works and the health and disease risks associated with genetically modified foods. Working in an independent study format, students learn to analyze and evaluate the risks as they pertain to genetically engineered food. Strong focus is given to action opportunities to determine the future of our food supply.

We have designed this course to be completed in four (4) weeks. It is anticipated that students will dedicate ten (10) hours a week to reading and preparing for the online examination. The online exam can be taken repeatedly until the student has attained a passing grade of 75%. Upon the successful completion of the course, a link will be activated that will allow the student to print out their Certificate of Completion.

In the event that a student experiences unforeseen difficulties, an additional grace period of two (2) weeks will be added to the timeframe for completion of the course. At the end of the six (6) week period the course will be closed and the student will need to access the course again.

The art of being a successful coach depends on the skills and techniques used by the coach. Students will be introduced to strategies for improving listening and questioning skills that will support clients in the elimination of self-limiting behaviors. Holistic nutritional professionals, as well as other life skill coaches must be adept at retrieving honest information from their clients in order to be able to guide them towards health and well-being. After mastering the fundamentals, students will be exposed to sample conversations, exercises, and questionnaires to enhance client relationships. This course is worth 3 CE credits.

The world of coaching has increased far beyond its connection to athletics to include a wide variety of demographic and interest-related niches. This course is designed for individuals who want to enhance their current coaching skills and for the beginner coach who needs guidance and instruction on how to be effective. In addition to learning about new techniques, students have the opportunity to incorporate new forms into their practice, work on activities related to real-world experiences, and increase their resources.

You will be introduced to the functional aspects involved in setting up a holistic health professional business while learning to establish realistic business goals and improving communication skills. This course is designed to guide you on your journey to a fulfilling and financially rewarding career. You will be exposed to topics including financial management, marketing, networking, and ethical practices. This course is worth 4 CE credits.

We have designed this course to be completed in five (5) weeks. It is anticipated that students will dedicate ten (10) hours a week to reading and preparing for the online examination. The online exam can be taken repeatedly until the student has attained a passing grade of 75%. Upon the successful completion of the course, a link will be activated that will allow the student to print out their Certificate of Completion.

In the event that a student experiences unforeseen difficulties, an additional grace period of two (2) weeks will be added to the timeframe for completion of the course. At the end of the seven (7) week period the course will be closed and the student will need to access the course again.

Many people suffer from headaches, weight gain, weight loss, or poor immunity to disease and gastrointestinal disorders. This course will offer insight into the symptoms of gluten intolerance and will uncover the dangers that gluten poses. Students will learn how to identify foods that contain gluten, recognize the factors contributing to gluten intolerance, and will receive nourishing meal plans that support health. The information provided in this course carries 3 CE credits from Hawthorn University.

In addition to the required textbook, this course includes informative and interesting webinars presented by professionals specializing in gluten intolerance and Celiac disease. Celiac disease is now recognized as a common chronic intestinal inflammatory disease of the American population. Although there is no known cure for this disease, students will learn about diagnosis, diets, gluten sensitivity, and treatment.

The online exam can be taken repeatedly until the student has attained a passing grade of 75%. The intent of Nutritional Strategies to Prevent and Manage Autistic Spectrum Disorders is to help raise awareness of autism and the other pervasive developmental disorders. Autism spectrum disorders affect 1 in 150 children in the U.S alone.

This course provides exceptionally valuable information to help understand and cope with autism and related health conditions. This course is rich is resources to assist both families and practitioners in order to prevent and manage autistic spectrum disorders.

In this course you will learn the genetic, environmental, and biochemical factors that influence autism spectrum disorders, as well as the common physiological implications such as liver function and detoxification, immune function and inflammation, digestion, endocrine and brain function. The impact of nutritional deficiencies will be explained and you will become familiar with various nutritional strategies, such as beneficial diet plans, specific vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other beneficial supplements. This course is worth 3 CE credits.

You will also learn to recognize food intolerances and food sensitivities, become familiar with specific diet options, and implement holistic nutritional interventions effectively.

After completing the course you should be able to make educated food and diet choices, and prepare health supportive snacks and meals even for “picky eaters”.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revised the autism prevalence rate to one in 110 children. At no other point in recent history has the need for autism awareness been so important.

According to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, more than 27 million Americans suffer from thyroid dysfunction, half of whom go undiagnosed. Of the detected cases of hypothyroidism, more than half are due to an autoimmune disorder called Hashimoto's disease, in which the immune system attacks and destroys thyroid gland tissue. Proper identification of the signs and symptoms of thyroid dysfunction and appropriate laboratory testing is essential. With individualized diet and lifestyle recommendations, most thyroid conditions will resolve without medication. This course is worth 4 CE credits.

In this course you will learn the various functions of the thyroid gland, the signs and symptoms of imbalanced thyroid, specific and reliable lab testing, and healthful diet and lifestyle suggestions that support thyroid health. This essential information can improve the quality of life as thyroid disorders are often misdiagnosed and poorly managed. By addressing the underlying contributing factors to thyroid dysfunction, thyroid health can be restored as well as the overall health of the individual.

This is a practical stress management course designed to help you reduce stress in your life. You will learn how to relax quickly in any situation, keep your confidence and energy levels high, and begin to achieve a balance in your work, home, and personal lives. Areas of focus include creating a wellness lifestyle in your environment and learning how to reduce stress through the adoption of healthy habits. In addition, course materials will cover the importance of attitude and how everyday interactions can be handled to negotiate win-win strategies in personal and professional relationships.

We have designed this course to be completed in two (2) weeks. It is anticipated that students will dedicate ten (10) hours a week to reading and preparing for the online examination. The online exam can be taken repeatedly until the student has attained a passing grade of 75%. Continuing Education Courses (CEUs)

Students interested in taking courses listed in the Continuing Education area will earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in those courses that begin with the prefix CE. 

Applicants interested in the Continuing Education (CE) courses are required to fill out demographic information on the application, and submit a photo ID. There is no application fee for any course in the CE program. Written permission for a legal guardian is required for admission of a person under legal age. 

Non-Matriculating Students

Students who want to take individual courses from any of Hawthorn's programs or from the Holistic Nutrition - Elective Course listings under Continuing Education are considered non-matriculating students and are subject to the same admission requirements as their program of interest. For example, students who want a master's level course must show proof of an earned bachelor's degree.  Students must also submit a photo ID.  Students interested in taking individual courses in the WTNC and MSTN programs must be members of the Westion A. Price Foundation.

Should a non-matriculating student decide to enroll into a program at a later date, a new program application must be submitted along with all required documentation for admission into the program. A $60 application fee (non-refundable) will be charged. Once the course is completed and the student has successfully passed the requirements listed in the course, a link to a Certificate of Completion will be opened allowing the student to print a Certificate. CE Cancellation & Refund

Continuing Education students who are registered in courses with a CE prefix may request a refund within seven (7) calendar days after the course is released to the student. Full tuition will be refunded provided the student requests the refund in writing and has not submitted any work for the course.
