"Better Food: The Myth of Consumer Sovereignty" with Dr. Jeffry Fawcett, PhD
- Category: Webinar Archives
- Created on Wednesday, 27 July 2011
---
Planting an organic garden on the South Lawn of the White House seemed like a victory for better food. With visibility and leadership, shoppers would be smarter and motivated to buy better food and that demand would push the production of better food. Yet while 70% of consumers believe that organic food is healthier, only 30% ever buy organic of any kind, and organic is only 3% of all food sales. Don't shoppers get it? All they have to do is demand better food and they'll get it. Or maybe not. This talk discusses the political economy of better food and what "better food" means in practice. Jeffry Fawcett, PhD is a writer, independent scholar, and health educator. He is the principal author with Layna Berman of Too Much Medicine, Not Enough Health. With Layna Berman he co-produces the weekly, hour-long Your Own Health And Fitness radio show. He also produces his own radio series, Health Bites, consisting of 5-minute health news commentaries and maintains a blog on the show's website (http://www.yourownhealthandfitness.org/). Jeffry is on the Hawthorn University faculty in the Holistic Health Program and is developing Hawthorn's Master of Environmental Studies program. His PhD in environmental economics and political economy is from UC Riverside.
